The N.O.M.A. Collection

"Keep'em Flying!..."

N.O.M.A. is committed to the airworthiness of all the aircraft in our collection.  We feel that aircraft were made to fly, and we intend to fly them if at all possible.  For example, both Howard Racers will be returned to flight status thus making them the only original airworthy  Golden Age Air Racers in existence.  Furthermore, we feel friends and members of the Museum should have the opportunity to experience the dream of Golden Age Flight .  Inquire with the Museum about flight opportunities in N.O.M.A.'s  Piper L-4J and WACO UPF-7, upon its return from restoration.

The Howard DGA-4 "Mike" air racer is the crown jewel of the N.O.M.A. collection. Built in 1932, "Mike" along with its twin, the DGA-4 "Ike", both had remarkable race careers at the National Air Races in the early 1930's.  N.O.M.A. hopes to have "Mike" airworthy by 2009 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of air racing.

"Moving Day"    The Howard DGA-4  "Ike" is prepared for transport to its new home with N.O.M.A. in August of 2006.  Located in Fremont, OH,  both racers were saved from extinction by Mr. Joe Binder.  "Ike" will be restored to flying condition and will be powered by its original Menasco B-6 engine.  When the restoration is complete, "Ike"   will be the  only original  airworthy example of competitive Golden Age Air Racer in existence.

N.O.M.A.'s  Piper L-4J Grasshopper was delivered to Naples, Italy during Christmas of 1944.  Assigned to the 88th Infantry Battalion Headquarters, 5th Army, 44-80785 flew under the command of Lieutenant Ernest Kowalik.  Lt.  Kowalik spearheaded the farthest single day advance of the 5th Army with this aircraft during March of 1945.  Read more about Lt. Kowalk's heroics while  flying this aircraft,  in his memoirs, entitled "Alone and Unarmed."   Become a member of N.O.M.A. and experience the thrill of flying this World War II combat veteran.  Inquire with N.O.M.A. staff for details.

Amazingly, "Ike's" Original power plant survived.  This is thought to be the only Menasco B-6 Engine in existence. Both racers were originally equipped with this engine but "Mike" was re-engined with a Menasco B-6S Supercharged engine in early 1933.  That engine was unfortunately disposed of in Columbus, Ohio during the early 1950's. To the left of the engine is the original cowling for "Mike". N.O.M.A. plans to restore this engine and fly it on "Ike" with an original Hamilton Standard race propeller.
